Intellectual Property Controversy in Music & Arts

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) charged two copyright infringement cases against AI music services like Suno and Udio in June 24, 2024. These generative models have allegedly copied vast amounts of copyrighted sound recordings without permissions from songwriters and record labels without licensing agreements. They are also accused of bypassing fundamental copyright protections, claiming “fair use” of copyrighted materials in training their models. In addition to cases involving prominent authors suing OpenAI for copyright infringement and Getty Images accusing Stability AI of replicating their watermarks in the AI outputs, questions posed include

1. Should AI companies be required to obtain consent and provide compensation for the use of copyrighted materials?

2. How should companies collaborate with artists, songwriters, and record labels to ensure proper licensing and compensation?

3. What are long-term effects on the music industry if AI-generated music saturates the market?

4. How are artists and musicians impacted by current advancements in AI generative content?

AI Bias and Discrimination: Screening and Q&A

Accusations of AI bias and discrimination abound: Amazon’s AI recruiting tool, which favored male applicants, and Midjourney’s biased image generation of professional roles. Nearly 65% of executives believe data bias exists in their organizations, and these failings can lead to severe consequences for marginalized communities. On July 12th, 2024, HR Software company Workday Inc. was sued for using automated tools that rejected applicants based on race, age, and disability. Understanding bias, both in education and industry, is paramount for students and employees.

Inaugural Conference: Elevating Student Voices in AI

This event will be an all-day virtual conference. In the morning, we will hold the General Assembly of Student Delegates, during which panels of speakers (i.e. experts in the field) will help guide to carve out the topical areas and important issues related to AI. This assembly will help shed light on potential implications that students should consider in the fields of Education, Privacy, Property Rights, Disinformation, Civil Rights, and Discrimination. Students will have the option to join different Congresses related to these fields and discuss the ethics of AI use as well as propose guidelines that will be compiled to create sustAIn’s Youth Proclamation. It will be a declaration of student opinions, concerns, and wishes for policies in their respective fields of AI.
